My Love / Hate Relationship With Instagram

If you are reading this blog, I'm going to assume and probably bet that you have at least one Instagram. Even if you don't utilize it to grow your business or brand, you most likely put some thought into each and every post. While you put a ton of thoughts and ideas into these posts, I bet you don't put nearly that much thought into what others are posting about. I'm not saying you shouldn't spend time curating a proper feed that helps push yourself/your brand, but I do feel people spend too much time on the numbers than they do the content that they truly want to create. I've come up with a list of sorts to either help push you to grow your Instagram or pull you away from looking at the wrong things when it comes down to it.

I LOVE how easy it is to showcase your work. You can quickly take an image and share it with anyone in the world that you can possibly connect with in record time. Before hashtags and social media, you had to spend tons of time to get any eyes on your work. I HATE how easy it is to showcase your work. This means we are all a small fish in a world sized pond. It can be so very hard to get anyone to spend anytime truly looking at what you are creating before they move on to the next.

I LOVE how easy it is to connect to other creators, photographers, musicians, etc. on Instagram. We're all one DM away from potentially creating a beneficial long lasting relationship with almost anyone in the world. That is bonkers compared to a decade ago. I HATE how easy it is to 'connect' with other creators. When you spend your day only viewing the highlights of everyone's work, it can be detrimental to your own health and feelings towards your work. While inspiration is good, too much content that is 'better than yours' can hinder your desire to create and move forward while pushing you towards self-doubt. I LOVE how easy it is to promote your work and your brand. You have an endless supply of potential avenues to seek to help grow and find clients and people to connect with. You can target advertise what you offer to a very specific audience. I HATE how easy it is to pay to promote goods and services. I feel like I can think of something and Instagram KNOWS what I'm thinking and I quickly see an ad for it... It's also become so common for almost all people to run ads. I can't scroll for more than 2 seconds before I see the next ad. It's a matter of time before it goes the way of the Facebook feed and NO ONE will see your image unless you pay to play...

I LOVE how quick you can just zone out and imagine yourself in a different environment based on a curated feed of beautiful images. You're able to see places and things you may have never had the chance to see.

I HATE how quick you can lose a significant chunk of time and just endlessly scroll and scroll. It got to the point that I had to download a timer app for my phone that limits my social media app usage per day. It's helped me cheer up a bit and accomplish more tasks every day.

I LOVE how easy I can share a 'portfolio' with a potential client and they are able to follow me for future work I post.

I HATE how people expect photographers to have a beautifully curated Instagram when a full website with a large portfolio is measurably better to view and appreciate photographs. Seeing your art on a tiny screen for somewhere between .5 seconds and 1 second really can't do it justice.

These are just opinions. There is no right or wrong, black or white, when it comes to Instagram. One day it will be gone (Myspace, Vine, Etc...) and all this fuss will be a thing of the past!

I'd love to hear your LOVE/HATE ideas!
